Laura
Kariotis (Modern, Lyrical, Jazz) Laura has been working
professionally in the industry for 20 years. She received her training
in dance performance and choreography from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
(BFA) working with some of the most prestigious and cutting edge
artists in dance. With a strong focus and background in the Humphrey/Limon
modern technique as well as a study in the Cunningham technique,
ballet, and various body mind fundamentals, Laura has been able
to explore every option as a artist and share that wealth of knowledge
with her own dancers. Her movement has been described as intense,
complex, emotional, and energetic. Laura also believes there is
a strong connection with every genre of dance. And she feels strongly
in using that connection both in her teaching techniques and choreography.
Her
professional work began with the Farrago Dance Company, a contemporary
jazz ensemble performing between the Milwaukee and Chicago metro
areas. She served both as dancer and choreographer. She then went
on to become a founding member of the Danceworks Performance Company
(DPC) in 1997. She has a great deal of pride in DPC’s ongoing
success and critical acclaim in the extended dance community. She
spent over 5 years with the company as principle dancer and a choreographer.
Laura has extensive choreographic and teaching experience: The Milwaukee
High School of the Arts, Danceworks Independent and Emerging Choreographer
Showcase, The Milwaukee Ballet School, Studio 1661, Westmont Arts
program, Talent Forum, Salt Creek Ballet School, and most recently
State Street Dance Company, RASA Dance Chicago, Dance Chicago Festivals,
and The Dance Factory Inc. She is currently on staff at the Dance
Factory Inc. in Wisconsin and has been on faculty at State Street
Dance Studio for the past 5 years. Her choreography has won numerous
awards and has earned her students scholarships and invites to some
of the top dance programs in the nation.
Laura
currently resides in Chicago, IL. She joined RASA Dance Chicago
as a resident choreographer in 2002, and then as Assistant Artistic
Director from 2003-07. Laura choreographed six professional works
on RASA to date. In July of 2007, Laura co-founded along with Madeline
Renwick (also formerly of RASA) Chicago’s newest contemporary
dance company, NoMi LaMad Dance, Inc. They joined forces after working
together for the past 5 years and are proud of the launch and premier
of their new company. It is their goal as a company to make their
mark on Chicago’s energetic dance scene while at the same
time giving back to the community by partnering with charitable
organizations to raise funds for worthy causes. Laura is also proud
to have a State Street alumni performing with NoMi and is honored
to partner with Linda Cunningham and State Street Dance Company
in various capacities to educate and enhance the art scene in the
Chicago metro and Fox Valley areas.
