Pilates Pilates, originally developed in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates, is a method of low impact body movement, which develops strength, flexibility, and endurance. It lengthens and strengthens muscles to create toned bodies, improved posture, alignment and balance. The emphasis of Pilates is on the body's core, where exercises are performed using the abdominal muscles and lower back to stabilize the body. And these exercises are noted for toning the abdominal, lower back, and hips into the body's power center. Correct breathing and relaxation of the neck and shoulders is central to Pilates.
