Character
Dance
With
its infinite possibilities, character dance is difficult to define
briefly. In relationship to classical ballet, it is usually thought
of as folk dance. But broadly stated, it is best defined as all
of those qualities not present in classical dance. Character dance
can be divided into the following classifications: National Dance
- Dramatic and Lyric Character - Satire - Grotesque and Eccentric
Mimicry
Hip
Hop
A
genre of dance that incorporates a certain style of creativity,
attitude, music, posture, and choreography. This genre stems from
early urban influences of rap and the inner city streets where many
different ethnic cultures and dance disciplines fused together to
form the exciting form of dance known as hip-hop.
Jazz
Jazz
is a very stylistically diverse form of dance. Jazz tends to fuse
various dance disciplines and uses those influences to produce a
unique movement style. Similar to Ballet, Jazz requires the dancer
to become familiar with their body and its safe and efficient use.
Jazz technique includes such concepts as proper body alignment,
body isolations, rhythmic awareness, musicality, and movement executions.
Modern
Modern Dance began in America in the early part of the
1900's as a rebellion against the strict codification of ballet.
Early modern dance pioneers threw off their shoes and decided to
use gravity and the suspension and release of falling as a means
of dance expression. They scorned the restrictions of tight tu-tu's
and corsets and pointe shoes. Modern dancers at that time began
to explore unaffected human movement as a means of dance expression.
That tradition continues to this day.
